Caloundra at sunset aerial - Sunshine Coast 7-day itinerary holiday guide

Sunshine Coast 7-Day Itinerary

Travel Planning9 min read

Seven days on the Sunshine Coast, based in Caloundra. Here's how to structure it - enough variety that you feel you've experienced the region properly, enough stillness that it actually feels like a holiday rather than a tour schedule.

The guiding principle: one significant thing per day, not five. The Sunshine Coast rewards slow exploration over rushed box-ticking. Trust the place to deliver.

Day 1 - Friday: Arrive and Settle

Arrive Friday afternoon. Don't plan anything for the first evening. Unpack, go to the rooftop, open something cold, and watch the sun go down over Pumicestone Passage. Walk to Bulcock Street for dinner. This is the transition day - its job is to shift your pace, not to achieve anything.

Day 2 - Saturday: Caloundra Beaches

Stay local. Morning swim at Kings Beach before the crowds arrive - aim for 7:30am at the water. Rock pools at low tide if the timing works. Slow breakfast on Bulcock Street. Afternoon on the rooftop pool. Late afternoon walk along the Pumicestone Passage foreshore for the evening light. Dinner on Bulcock Street or cook in - this is a night to stay close to home.

Day 3 - Sunday: Noosa

Leave Caloundra by 8am. The coastal walk in Noosa National Park before 9am is a different experience from arriving at 11 with the crowds. Hells Gates and Alexandria Bay by 10:30am, then Hastings Street for late breakfast and a browse. Noosa Main Beach in the afternoon. Drive home for sunset from the Level 12 rooftop. See our full Noosa day trip guide for the detail.

Day 4 - Monday: Australia Zoo

On the road to Beerwah by 8:30am. Full day at Australia Zoo - Crocoseum show booked as soon as you arrive, African Savannah before the heat peaks, kangaroo walkthrough, the works. Back by late afternoon. This is the high-energy day of the week; the rooftop spa earns its keep tonight.

Day 5 - Tuesday: Pumicestone Passage and Hinterland

Morning on the water - kayak or paddleboard hire from the Bulcock Beach foreshore. 2 to 3 hours on Pumicestone Passage. Back to the apartment for lunch. Afternoon drive to Maleny and the hinterland - Maleny Botanic Gardens, the village, McCarthy's Lookout. Glass House Mountains lookout on Steve Irwin Way on the way home for the late light on the peaks.

Day 6 - Wednesday: Eumundi Markets then Mooloolaba

Leave Caloundra by 7am to hit the Eumundi Markets at opening. Two hours browsing, eating, and buying things you didn't know you needed. Then drive to Mooloolaba for lunch on the Esplanade and an afternoon at Mooloolaba Beach or the river. Back to Caloundra for the last rooftop sunset of the trip.

Day 7 - Thursday: Slow Final Morning

The last day is not for cramming in one more thing. Slow morning on the rooftop. Final swim at Kings Beach. Long breakfast on Bulcock Street - sit there longer than you need to. Pack slowly. Drive home knowing exactly when you're coming back.

The Flexibility Built Into This Itinerary

Every day here has a natural indoor fallback if the weather turns - the aquarium, the hinterland cafés, the apartment itself. None of the day trips are more than 45 minutes away. If you need a pure rest day, nothing on this schedule is unmissable - it's a framework, not a contract.
