Bulcock Beach is the sheltered, passage-facing beach at the town end of Caloundra. It is the reason Caloundra works for families, and the reason the sunsets here beat every east-facing beach on the Sunshine Coast.
The water: calm, but respect the tide
Bulcock Beach faces the Pumicestone Passage rather than the open ocean, so there is no surf and no shore break - the water is flat and shallow near the sand. That makes it the best beach in Caloundra for toddlers and nervous swimmers.
The catch is the current. When the tide is running through the Passage it moves fast, especially towards the northern end near the channel. Swim close to shore, stay with children, and treat an outgoing tide seriously. If you want patrolled surf swimming, walk eight minutes to Kings Beach.
The boardwalk and the coastal walk
The Bulcock Beach boardwalk runs along the foreshore on stilts above the sand - flat, pram and wheelchair friendly, and lit at night. It connects into the Caloundra coastal walk, which continues past Happy Valley to Kings Beach, Shelly Beach, Moffat Head and Dicky Beach.
Walking the full stretch to Moffat Head and back takes about 90 minutes at an easy pace, with coffee stops at both ends.
Sunsets, and why they are different here
Almost every beach on the Sunshine Coast faces east, so you get sunrises. Bulcock Beach looks west and north-west across the Passage to Bribie Island, which means the sunset lands directly in front of you over the water. Bring a takeaway from Bulcock Street and take the seats along the boardwalk.
