Aerial view over Bulcock Beach and Pumicestone Passage to Bribie Island - Caloundra beaches compared

Caloundra Beaches Compared

Beaches & Water6 min read

Caloundra has a surprising number of beaches packed into a relatively small headland - and each one has a genuinely different character, faces a different direction, and suits different activities and moods. Understanding the differences before you arrive means you spend less time walking to the wrong beach and more time in the right one.

Bulcock Beach - The Passage Beach

Faces west over Pumicestone Passage rather than the open ocean. The water is calm and sheltered, the outlook is across the waterway to Bribie Island, and the beach itself is gentler and quieter than the ocean-facing options. This is not a surf beach - there's no real swell here. What it offers instead is something different: morning walks with pelicans, calm water for paddling and kayaking, and the best sunset view in Caloundra.

The Bulcock Beach foreshore is where the kayak and paddleboard hire operators are based, and the Pumicestone Passage foreshore walk starts here. In whale season, this foreshore is one of the best shore-based whale watching positions near Caloundra. The apartment at Caloundra Escape is a 2-minute walk from this beach - the Level 12 rooftop view is directly over this waterway.

Kings Beach - The Swimmer's Beach

The main patrolled swimming beach in Caloundra and the pick for most visitors on most days. Faces northeast, open ocean, consistent swell that's suitable for swimming and body surfing. Surf Life Saving Queensland rates it among the safest patrolled beaches on the coast. The rock pools at the southern end are a highlight at low tide - a naturally enclosed marine environment that's genuinely special.

The foreshore infrastructure at Kings Beach is the best of any Caloundra beach - grassy shade areas, good picnic facilities, a saltwater pool, a children's playground, electric BBQs, and public amenities that are actually maintained. For families particularly, this is the beach that works best as a full-day destination. It's 8 minutes on foot from the apartment.

Shelly Beach - The Quieter Option

Continue past Kings Beach heading north on the coastal walk and you'll reach Shelly Beach - smaller, less visited, and with its own distinct character. The beach is slightly more sheltered than Kings Beach, the crowds are significantly thinner, and the coastal heath vegetation behind the sand gives it a different feel from the more developed Kings Beach foreshore.

Good for a quiet morning swim when Kings Beach feels too busy. Worth knowing about even if it's not your primary destination - the coastal walk between Kings Beach and Shelly Beach is one of the best short sections of the broader 25km track.

Happy Beach - The Local Secret

Down a set of stairs near the Caloundra headland, Happy Beach is a small, protected cove that most visitors never find. No signage from the main street. No facilities. No crowds - particularly on weekday mornings. The water is calm, the entry is easy, and the sense of having discovered somewhere genuinely off the tourist map is real. Low tide reveals a small sandy expanse; high tide makes it a very different experience.

Which Beach for Which Day?

Morning walk and coffee: the Bulcock Beach foreshore and Passage - flat, scenic, wildlife. Family swimming day: Kings Beach - patrolled, playground, rock pools, all the infrastructure. Couples looking for somewhere quieter: Shelly Beach or Happy Beach. Kayaking and paddleboarding: Bulcock Beach for Passage access. Sunset: Bulcock Beach foreshore without question - the west-facing orientation over the Passage is unmatched.

The apartment at Caloundra Escape sits within walking distance of all of these. Bulcock Beach is 2 minutes from the front door. Kings Beach is 8 minutes. Shelly Beach and Happy Beach are reached via the coastal walk in 20 to 30 minutes. The car stays parked.
