Ask any Caloundra regular to name their favourite beach and the majority will say Kings Beach without hesitating. It's patrolled, protected by the headland from strong southerly swells, and sits within walking distance of everything Caloundra has to offer. For families, couples, solo swimmers, and anyone who simply wants a beach that consistently delivers - Kings Beach is the answer.
Getting There
From Bulcock Street in the heart of Caloundra, Kings Beach is an 8-minute walk downhill toward the headland. If you're staying at our Bulcock Beach apartment, you'll pass Bulcock Beach itself on the way - worth a morning walk comparison, because the two beaches serve very different purposes and have genuinely different characters.
The Swimming
Kings Beach faces northeast, sheltered enough for safe, reliable swimming in most conditions. Surf Life Saving Queensland consistently rates it among the safest beaches on the coast for patrolled conditions. The flags are up on weekends and school holidays as a baseline, and extended hours run through summer.
The water is clear, the sand is white, and the depth drops away gradually from shore - making it genuinely safe for children and comfortable for confident adult swimmers who want to get out past the break. Water temperature stays accessible year-round: 26 to 28 degrees in peak summer, still swimmable in the low 20s through winter. Queensland's subtropical climate makes for a long effective swimming season.
The Rock Pools
The southern end of Kings Beach has natural rock pools exposed at low tide - one of those features that takes a good beach and makes it genuinely memorable. For children they're hours of entertainment. For adults at low tide they're a quietly fascinating 30 minutes. Bring reef shoes - the rock surface is uneven and sharp in sections - and check the tide before you plan your day around them.
The Foreshore
The grassy foreshore behind Kings Beach is genuinely well-maintained - proper shade trees, sheltered picnic facilities, electric BBQs, a children's playground, and public showers and toilets that are consistently clean and operational. It's the kind of beach infrastructure that makes a full day genuinely comfortable rather than just possible.
The saltwater swimming pool on the foreshore is worth knowing about - particularly for smaller children who want the beach experience without unpredictable surf conditions. It's one of those features that elevates Kings Beach from 'very good beach' to 'genuinely excellent family destination'.
Best Times to Visit
Early morning before 8am is the best swimming time - the light is exceptional, the beach is quiet, and the water is usually at its calmest. Late afternoon from 4pm onward is the second-best window - the worst of the heat has passed and the golden hour light on the water and headland is beautiful.
Avoid midday in summer. The sun is genuinely brutal at that hour and the beach at peak time on a hot Saturday in January is a different experience from the calm morning swim that makes Caloundra's reputation. Weekdays over weekends in school holidays if crowd-avoidance matters to you.
