Surfer on wave Sunshine Coast Queensland - surf spots near Caloundra beginners guide

Surf Spots Near Caloundra

Beaches & Water6 min read

The Sunshine Coast has some of the most accessible surf in Queensland - consistent enough to be good, forgiving enough for beginners, and varied enough to keep intermediate surfers interested. From Caloundra, you're within 35 minutes of several genuinely good surf environments, each with different characteristics and suited to different ability levels.

For Complete Beginners

Dicky Beach - 10 Minutes from Caloundra

The best starting point for first-time surfers near Caloundra. A gentle, consistent beach break with a sandy bottom, lifeguard patrol on weekends and school holidays, and a forgiving wave that breaks predictably enough to actually get upright on. Multiple surf schools operate from Dicky Beach and can have a complete beginner standing on a wave in the first session - the combination of the board size they put you on and the wave quality here is specifically designed for early success.

Mooloolaba Beach - 25 Minutes

A longer beach with more variety than Dicky Beach. The southern end is gentler - better for beginners. The northern end picks up more swell and suits more experienced surfers. Several established surf schools operate from Mooloolaba with good reputations for teaching methodology. If Dicky Beach is fully booked for lessons, Mooloolaba is the natural alternative.

For Intermediate Surfers

Coolum Beach - 35 Minutes from Caloundra

Coolum is the go-to for intermediate surfers on the southern Sunshine Coast. More consistent swell than the beaches closer to Caloundra, with a right-hand point break on the southern end that rewards surfers who can read and position themselves correctly. On a good northeast swell, this spot produces long, clean rides that have nothing to apologise for.

Coolum Surf School here is one of the better coaching operations on the coast - worth a lesson if you're looking to make a specific improvement in your surfing rather than just spending time in the water.

Point Cartwright - 20 Minutes

A rocky point break near the Mooloolah River mouth that works best on a mid-sized northeast swell. More experienced intermediates only - the entry and exit over rocks requires confidence, and the wave is less forgiving of poor positioning than a beach break. When the swell is right, it produces one of the better waves between Caloundra and Noosa.

Surf Lessons: What to Expect

A proper beginner lesson runs 90 minutes to 2 hours and includes board, leash, and rash vest hire. The Sunshine Coast surf schools are generally of good standard - they'll have most complete beginners upright and moving by the end of the first session. The key is choosing the right surf school for the conditions on the day rather than booking the cheapest option and hoping the waves cooperate.

LESSON TIP: Book your surf lesson for the morning session (typically 7:30 to 9am). Morning conditions on the Sunshine Coast are almost always calmer and cleaner than afternoon, the water is cooler and more pleasant, and your instructor will have more energy and patience at the start of the day than the end.

Surf Safety

Always swim between the flags on patrolled beaches. Rip currents are present on all the beaches listed here - understanding what a rip looks like and how to get out of one (swim parallel to shore, not against it) is basic knowledge that every person who enters Australian surf should have before they get in the water. The lifeguards on Sunshine Coast beaches are excellent - if in doubt, ask them.
