The Sunshine Coast has always been Queensland's couples escape. There's something about the light up here - softer than the Gold Coast, more golden, more forgiving. The pace drops the moment you leave the highway. And Caloundra, tucked at the southern end of the coast, offers something Noosa can't quite manage: all the beauty, none of the weekend crowds.
Here's how to do a proper romantic Sunshine Coast weekend, based out of Bulcock Beach, done well.
Friday Evening - Arrive and Decompress
The best romantic weekends start with doing absolutely nothing. Arrive Friday afternoon. Don't plan dinner for the first hour. Go straight to the rooftop. A glass of whatever you brought, the view across Pumicestone Passage catching the late light, the Glass House Mountains silhouetted to the west. That's the reset. That's why you came.
When you're ready, walk down to Bulcock Street for dinner. The restaurant scene has improved dramatically in recent years - there are now genuinely good options within a 5-minute walk that would hold their own in any Australian city. Book ahead on weekends; the good places fill up.
Saturday Morning - The Beach Before the World Wakes Up
Set an alarm. Not an aggressive one - 7am. Walk to Bulcock Beach before the sun is fully up. In the early morning, with almost nobody else around, this stretch of coastline facing out over Pumicestone Passage is one of the most peaceful places you'll find within driving distance of Brisbane. The pelicans are working. The light on the water is exceptional. There's nothing demanding your attention.
Swim if you want to. Walk the foreshore south. Then breakfast on Bulcock Street - proper coffee, fresh food, the kind of unhurried morning that reminds you what weekends were supposed to be.
Saturday Mid-Morning - Out on the Passage
Hire a kayak or paddleboard from the Bulcock Beach foreshore operators and get out onto Pumicestone Passage. This is genuinely one of the most underrated things you can do on the Sunshine Coast. The water is sheltered, the current is gentle, and paddling out to where you can see nothing but waterway and hinterland in every direction is a completely different experience from being on the beach - quieter, more physical, more present.
Dolphins are regular Passage residents, particularly in the early morning. Spotting them from a kayak - metres away, completely unperturbed - is one of those moments that sticks.
Saturday Afternoon - Day Trip to Noosa
Drive 45 minutes north to Noosa for the afternoon. The coastal walk in Noosa National Park to Hells Gates and Alexandria Bay is one of the finest short walks in Queensland - dramatic headlands, turquoise bays, and the particular satisfaction of finding a largely deserted beach accessible only on foot. Allow 2.5 hours for the full return walk.
Wander Hastings Street before heading home. Coffee at Aromas. Browse the independent boutiques. Then drive back to Caloundra for sunset from the Level 12 rooftop - which, given the westward orientation over the Passage, is not optional.
Saturday Evening - Dinner Done Properly
Saturday night deserves a proper meal. Caloundra has good options and Mooloolaba (25 minutes north) has excellent ones - the Esplanade restaurant strip there has seen real quality improvement in recent years. Whatever you choose, book ahead. The good tables on a Saturday evening go.
Sunday - Slow Morning, Reluctant Departure
Sunday morning is for the rooftop spa, a long breakfast with nowhere to be, and the dawning realisation that a weekend away felt genuinely restorative rather than just busy in a different location. That's the sign you did it right.
One final swim at Kings Beach before you pack. It's different in the morning light than the evening - calmer, cooler, more contemplative. Then drive home knowing exactly when you're coming back.
Where to Stay
The apartment at Caloundra Escape is designed for exactly this kind of weekend. Two bedrooms, a full kitchen for the evenings you want to stay in, a private balcony, and a rooftop heated pool and spa with uninterrupted water views that makes the whole stay feel genuinely special. You deal directly with the owner - no bots, no call centres, no platform overhead.
