Caloundra sunset Queensland - best time to visit Sunshine Coast weather guide

Best Time to Visit Caloundra

Travel Planning6 min read

The honest answer is that Caloundra is genuinely good all year. The Sunshine Coast earns its name - this is one of the most consistently pleasant climates in Australia. But the character of each season is genuinely different, and knowing what you're walking into helps you get the most out of it.

Summer - December to February

Peak season for good reason. Water temperatures are at their best (26 to 28°C), the days are longest, and Caloundra in full summer hum is genuinely vibrant - markets, events, the beach culture operating at full capacity. The trade-off is the crowds: Christmas and New Year are the busiest period on the Sunshine Coast, and January school holidays fill the apartment and every good accommodation option quickly.

Summer weather runs warm and humid with afternoon storms that arrive fast, deliver intensely, and usually clear within an hour. The post-storm light on the Passage is extraordinary. If summer crowds don't bother you, this is the season that delivers the most.

Booking lead time: 10 to 12 weeks minimum for school holiday periods. Don't leave it to the last month.

Autumn - March to May

The insider's season. Crowds drop significantly from the January peak. Prices ease. The weather remains genuinely beautiful - warm, progressively drier, and with a quality of light that photographers and artists have been coming to the Sunshine Coast for specifically. March through May is the sweet spot for a Caloundra stay that combines good weather with a relaxed atmosphere.

Water temperature stays warm through March and April (23 to 26°C) - swimming conditions are actually comfortable for longer than the summer months because the crowds that make the beach feel like work have gone. May starts to cool slightly but remains excellent.

Winter - June to August

Queensland winter on the Sunshine Coast is genuinely one of Australia's best-kept travel secrets and one of the best arguments for choosing Caloundra over beach destinations further south. Temperatures run 20 to 24°C during the day, nights are cool but not cold, rainfall is at its annual minimum, and the skies are the kind of blue that makes every photograph look professionally lit.

The beaches are quiet enough to feel private on weekday mornings. The rooftop spa is particularly appealing in the mild evenings. And June marks the start of whale season - from June through November, humpback whales migrate past Caloundra on their way north and south, and June through August captures the adult migration with excellent shore-based sighting opportunities.

WINTER SECRET: The rock pools at Kings Beach are at their clearest in winter - lower UV, cleaner water, and the animals in them are more active in the cooler temperatures. Early morning winter rock pool sessions are among the most underrated experiences Caloundra offers.

Spring - September to November

Spring builds back toward summer in the best possible way. Temperatures warm, the days extend, and the coast begins filling again with energy without yet hitting the school holiday intensity. September and October are peak whale season - the southward migration with calves is in full swing, and this is the best time for both shore-based and boat-tour whale watching.

Spring also brings some of the Sunshine Coast's better events - food festivals, markets, and the general energy of a coastal town waking up after the quiet of winter. November starts warm enough that swimming at any time of day is comfortable again.
