Beach holiday packing essentials flat lay - Caloundra Sunshine Coast packing list

Caloundra Holiday Packing List

Travel Planning5 min read

Caloundra covers a lot of ground as a holiday destination - beach days, hinterland day trips, water activities, good restaurants, potential hiking. Packing well means you're ready for all of it without lugging a bag that won't close. This is the practical list - based on what guests wish they'd had and what they didn't need to bring.

Beach Essentials

SPF50+ sunscreen in quantity. This is not negotiable on the Sunshine Coast - the UV index is serious even on overcast days and even in winter. The locals wear sunscreen in June. You should too. Bring more than you think you need; running out halfway through the week and overpaying at a convenience store is a predictable and avoidable experience.

Reef shoes - essential for the rock pools at Kings Beach and for launching a kayak from the Pumicestone Passage foreshore. The rock surfaces are sharp and uneven, and bare feet regret the decision every time. A rash vest for children (and adults spending long hours in the water) is more reliable than sunscreen reapplication every 90 minutes and much more practical for active swimming days.

Reusable water bottles - the apartment has a good water filter, fill up before heading out rather than buying single-use plastic repeatedly. A decent wide-brim hat. Binoculars if you're interested in wildlife - the Pumicestone Passage birdlife rewards them, and in whale season (June to November) you'll want them on the headland.

For Day Trips and Walking

Proper closed-toe shoes are essential for Glass House Mountains hiking and for the Noosa National Park coastal walk - the summit sections of Ngungun and the rocky headland sections of the Noosa track require a sole that grips. Thongs will not do.

A small day pack (15 to 20 litres) for water, sunscreen, a snack, and a light layer for the hinterland where temperatures can be 5 degrees cooler than the coast. A lightweight packable rain jacket for Queensland's occasional dramatic afternoon shower - the kind that appears from nowhere and disappears equally fast. If you're planning to be on the hinterland when it happens, you'll want it.

For the Apartment

A bluetooth speaker for the balcony - it's exactly that kind of space and the setup demands one. Your preferred coffee if you're particular about it; the apartment has a good machine but the beans it comes with may not match your preference. A good book for the rooftop pool, where the absence of agenda demands something to read. Your own swimming goggles if you prefer them - the pool is clear enough that they're worth using.

What You Don't Need to Bring

Beach chairs or a shade umbrella - these are available for hire at Kings Beach and Bulcock Beach from the foreshore operators. Full kitchen equipment - the apartment is properly equipped. A car full of groceries - Bulcock Street has a supermarket, a good bakery, and a deli within easy walking distance, and the Eumundi Markets (Wednesday and Saturday) are the best single produce shop in the region.

OVERPACKING REALITY CHECK: Most Caloundra weeks involve a very small wardrobe rotation - bathers, a casual outfit for Bulcock Street, something presentable for dinner, and activewear for walks. The washing machine in the building means you genuinely don't need a different outfit for every day.

The apartment at Caloundra Escape has everything else you need.
