Queensland's summer holidays open on Saturday 12 December 2026 for state schools (Term 4 ends Friday 11 December). That is when the Sunshine Coast flips into its busiest season, and when the smartest stays are the ones that still feel like a home base, not a logistics problem.
Caloundra in December is warm water, long light, Sunday markets, and evenings on Pumicestone Passage. It is also popular. The way through is not to chase every attraction. It is to park once in a walkable town, claim the rooftop for the heat of the day, and let Christmas week feel like a holiday instead of a commute.
This guide covers what December school holidays are like here, why a southern Sunshine Coast base works for SEQ families, and how much lead time to allow.
Why Caloundra works as a Christmas base
- Closest real Sunshine Coast town to Brisbane for SEQ families driving up
- Two waters: calm Passage at Bulcock, ocean swim at Kings Beach
- Walkable food so you are not booking a car every dinner
- Level 12 rooftop for the heat of the day when the sand is full
- Day-trip reach to Australia Zoo, hinterland, Mooloolaba, or a Noosa day without paying northern rates every night
Our Sunshine Coast with kids guide is the family companion. Caloundra with kids narrows to what is right in town. Beaches compared helps you pick water to the hour.
Independent and Catholic schools sometimes finish in late November or the first days of December. If that is your calendar, confirm your school's date. The state holiday window from 12 December is the one most SEQ families plan around.
What December feels like (weather and pace)
Summer on this coast means water temperatures at their best, long days, and a town that is alive. Afternoon storms can arrive fast, deliver intensely, and clear within an hour. The post-storm light on the Passage is often the best of the day.
Crowds are real from mid-December through January. That is not a reason to avoid Caloundra. It is a reason to choose a base with underground parking, a full kitchen, and amenities upstairs so the middle of the day does not depend on finding shade on a packed beach.
Our best time to visit guide already says summer delivers the most, with the honest trade-off of peak density. December school holidays are that chapter.
Two waters and a Level 12 rooftop
From Bulcock Street you walk to Bulcock Beach in about two minutes and to Kings Beach for the patrolled ocean swim. Passage water is calm. Kings is the ocean day.
The apartment balconies have no view. The shared Level 12 rooftop has Pumicestone Passage, ocean and Glass House Mountains views, including sunset over the Passage. Whale season has largely wrapped by December. Shared rooftop amenities (pool, spa, sauna, gym and BBQ) matter more in peak summer than in shoulder months: heat of the day, kids' reset, evening spa when the sand is done.
Soft December colour (verified)
- Caloundra Street Fair - Sundays 8am-1pm on Bulcock Street through the holidays
- Boxing Day Races - Saturday 26 December, Sunshine Coast Turf Club (SCTC)
- NYE Twilight Races - Thursday 31 December, Sunshine Coast Turf Club
Optional. The core of a good December stay is still the base: beach, rooftop, walkable nights, sleep that works for a family of four.
Lead time honesty
Peak school holidays book early. The live site and our season guide already advise 10-12 weeks minimum thinking for school-holiday periods. That is the honest version of planning for December and January. Lock your school calendar first, then lock the stay. Do not leave Christmas week to the last month.
