The Sunshine Coast has quietly built one of the most interesting food identities in Queensland - and it gets more interesting every year. The combination of a strong hinterland farming community, excellent subtropical produce, quality local seafood, and a restaurant scene that's confident enough to stop imitating cities has produced something genuinely distinctive. A food and wine weekend here is a legitimate reason to visit, not just an afterthought to the beach.
The Hinterland - Where the Food Comes From
The Sunshine Coast Hinterland - Maleny, Montville, Mapleton, Kenilworth, and the smaller towns connecting them - is the agricultural heart of the region. Dairy farms, macadamia orchards, tropical fruit growers, boutique cheese producers, honey operations, and a growing number of farm-to-table restaurants that have chosen the hinterland deliberately for its produce proximity.
The Maleny Food and Wine Festival runs annually in May and offers the most concentrated expression of what the hinterland produces - cooking demonstrations, long-table lunches, producer tours, and the rare opportunity to drink wine while looking at the Glass House Mountains from a hillside. Worth planning a trip specifically around if food is your primary motivation for visiting the Sunshine Coast. See our Maleny day trip guide for the broader hinterland picture.
The Eumundi Markets - For Self-Catering
For anyone staying in a self-catering apartment, the Eumundi Markets (Wednesday and Saturday) are the best single source of regional produce on the Sunshine Coast. Local honey, hinterland cheeses, fresh tropical fruits, artisan bread, preserves, smallgoods - the kind of market shopping that makes cooking in the apartment kitchen feel like a genuine pleasure rather than a convenience.
Stock the kitchen on Wednesday morning and you'll eat extremely well for the rest of the week without spending restaurant money every night. The apartment at Caloundra Escape is fully equipped for this - proper knives, good pots, a kitchen that can actually produce a real meal.
Caloundra and the Coast
Bulcock Street in Caloundra has improved significantly as a dining destination and now offers genuinely good options across breakfast, lunch, and dinner. The best of the Bulcock Street restaurants are using local produce, taking their wine lists seriously, and producing food that doesn't need the context of a beach view to be worth ordering.
Mooloolaba's Esplanade strip is the highest concentration of quality dining on the southern coast - the fresh seafood options in particular are worth the 25-minute drive north. The combination of morning seafood at the Mooloolaba wharf and an afternoon back in Caloundra is one of those days that's hard to improve on.
Noosa - The Pinnacle of Sunshine Coast Dining
Noosa's restaurant scene operates at a level above the rest of the coast. Several restaurants here have national profiles - Wasabi, Locale, and a handful of others produce food that would compete seriously in Sydney or Melbourne. Worth booking a special dinner as part of a Noosa day trip and making the drive back to Caloundra after a long meal part of the evening rather than a rush.
The Curated Plate Food Festival
The Sunshine Coast's major annual food event runs for 10 days in late July/early August - the heart of the dry season. Long-table lunches, chef collaborations, producer tours, special menus across the coast's restaurants, and cooking events that range from casual to highly produced. If you can time your Caloundra stay to overlap with The Curated Plate, the food dimension of the trip takes on a different dimension entirely.
