SEA LIFE Sunshine Coast at Mooloolaba is the Sunshine Coast's main aquarium - and it's genuinely good, particularly for families with children under 12. It's also the best indoor wet-weather option on the coast by a considerable margin, which matters more than you'd expect given Queensland's habit of delivering rain without warning.
From Caloundra, Mooloolaba is 25 minutes north - a quick run up Nicklin Way that's easy to factor into almost any day's plan.
The Underwater Ocean Tunnel
The centrepiece of the whole experience. Walking through a clear tunnel with sharks, rays, and reef fish passing overhead and on all sides is a genuinely impressive piece of environmental design - the kind of thing that's hard to explain but immediately memorable when you're standing inside it. Children go quiet in this section, which tells you everything.
The sharks are large enough that the scale of them overhead creates a real response. The rays move with a fluid grace that's unexpectedly beautiful. It's not long - maybe 5 minutes to walk through - but it's the thing people mention when they describe the visit.
The Seal Presentations
Timed shows with resident fur seals - educational, interactive, and very well delivered. This isn't a circus performance with seals doing tricks; it's a demonstration of natural behaviours with handlers explaining what you're seeing and why it matters. The quality of the keeper presentation is noticeably higher than the average wildlife show. Children love it; adults who go in expecting to be indifferent usually come out impressed.
Check show times when you arrive and plan your visit around one. The viewing area fills up - arrive 10 minutes early to get a good spot.
Touch Tanks
Hands-on rock pool exhibits where younger children can touch starfish, sea cucumbers, and other marine life under staff supervision. The most consistently popular exhibit with the under-8 set and worth slowing down for even when kids want to rush through. Staff are genuinely good at engaging children of different ages with the marine biology context.
Jellyfish Displays
Unexpectedly beautiful. Several jellyfish species displayed in illuminated cylindrical tanks against dark backgrounds - the visual effect is striking enough that adults stop here longer than the kids. Worth a deliberate slow pause that you might not give it on a first pass through.
Honest Assessment: Is It Worth It?
For families with children under 12: yes, comfortably. Plan 2 to 3 hours, book online in advance (marginally cheaper than gate price and skips the queue), and time your visit around a seal show. For couples or adults without children: it's a good 90 minutes but probably not your first priority on a week-long Sunshine Coast trip unless it's raining or you have a genuine interest in marine life.
